Working with Henna - Aftercare Tips

As you can see, a good henna paste will stay on the skin even while working! This henna paste has been sprayed once with a lemon sugar glaze... but more importantly, the client knows that the longer she leaves the paste undisturbed on her skin, the darker the finished color will be.

As the weather turns cooler, we are coming to the end of every Saturday henna tattoo at The Midnight Sun. Please call the studio - (904) 993-7466 - to see if henna will be offered on a Saturday, or to get more information about scheduling a henna party. Hiring a henna tattoo artist for your party, event, or fundraising effort assures your guests of a unique, relaxing and artistic evening.

Simple Henna Tattoo for the Feet

foot tattoo henna toesWhen coming for a henna tattoo on the foot, please be sure to wear sandals that leave enough room to fit the kind of tattoo you want.

This photo is a good example of a sandal that leaves enough room to place a small henna tattoo that flatters the foot as well as the toes.

Luckily, the little peacock design also is flattering to the golden sandal my client chose to wear. When getting a tattoo on the foot, it is important to leave the sandal on, so that I am sure not to draw your design too close to the shoe.. that way the henna will not rub off with wear.

If you want a tattoo that covers more of the top of the foot, then a little slide on shoe, or mule might be a better choice. This henna tattoo cost $15 dollars and took about 15 minutes from start to dry time. Stop by The Midnight Sun this Saturday between 11:00 Am & 5:00 PM for your henna tattoo. We will be leaving early this Saturday!

Henna Tattoo Design for the Back of the Hand.

henna tattoo pattern hand designThis is an example of the kinds of henna tattoo you can order at The Midnight Sun, 1055 Park Street, Jacksonville, Florida, 32204. Artists are almost always available on Saturdays, and appointments are helpful.

The is a "chef's choice" style, which means the customer decides how much she want to spend, and the style of henna she likes. The henna artist then creates a unique pattern, base on traditional designs, to fit your taste & your budget.

This particular henna cost $20 and was drawn to include the clients jewelry in the pattern. You can see that there is a good bit of negative space in the design, which I think makes it visually very attractive.

This pattern was also drawn with the wetter paste, so the henna did take a bit longer to dry on the skin. We used 2009 Jamila Henna, fresh off the plane for this tattoo. We'll see if we get a photo of the finished color.

Bridal Henna - Free Hand Design

One of the great joys of the web is that it enables me to see the great skills of other mehndi artists.

This photo is inspired by the work of the fine artist at Hasina Mehnd. AFter seeing one of her more recent henna designs, I knew I had to work a bit harder to be able to offer my customers the best of traditional henna.

I was lucky to have a willing volunteer, and about an hour of to do this design. The design went along rather quickly until I got to the middle of the palm of the hand. This is traditional henna, and I hope to be able to offer more photos, more often.

If you would like to have a henna like this, it is best to make an appointment. This kind of henna takes a plenty of paste, space & free time.

I hope you will be inspired to enjoy this lovely body art.

Arm Jewelry - a henna tattoo pattern for the inner arm

henna tattoo pattern for the inner armHere is a henna tattoo pattern for the inner arm. It is a free hand design which took about ten minutes from start to finish. The pattern flows with the muscle structure of the client, as well ... the energy flow of this particular goddess who was just open to what ever art seemed right for the day.

One of the blessings of doing henna in Five Points is that more & more clients are choosing henna as living art - thus art for art's sake, or as a means of self-expression. Sometimes just as a treat, a bit of pampering that takes one on the evolutionary journey of Mehandi, or henna tattoo.

If you have never had henna before, then you see in this photo what appears to be a black tattoo. What you are really seeing is a photo of henna paste still on the skin. Under the paste, the henna mixture is interacting with the skin. Henna is a heat activated body dye that penetrates the skin.

The hotter the skin is, the more the pores open, and the deeper the final color. Also, in warm weather, we may sweat a bit, and this helps to keep the paste moist on the skin. When the paste is moist, it can easily stain the skin. This is why lemon sugar is applied after the paste is a bit dry... to keep it moist & active. Also, the sugar in the glaze helps keep the henna from falling off the skin.

At present, henna tattoo is offer only on Saturdays on a walk-in basis at 1055 Park Street, The Midnight Sun, in Five Points, Riverside, Jacksonville, Florida. Please feel welcome to call (904) 993-7466 for more information.

Henna Tattoo Pattern Booklets from India

indian henna pattern bookletHere is a lovely little henna pattern booklet that is for sale at Spirit Vision Henna. Click the title of this post to purchase this book, or others like it. I have learned so much about traditional henna design by studying these little collections.

When I first saw many of the patterns in booklets like this one, I was overwhelmed! Henna presented a new way of thinking about line, movement, pattern & space... it was dazzling. As well, it was hard for me to know where to start a pattern, how to lay it out and of course how to create all that intricate detail without making a smudgy mess of it all.

Over the past six years, I have come to know that the quality & thickness of the paste makes all the difference... not only in easy of application, the ability to draw fine lines, but also in the final color. Thus, the quality and freshness of the henna powder are essential to a good outcome. I still use Jamila Henna mixed with lemon juice, essential oils & my spiced henna tea to make a fragrant paste that goes on quickly.

I am please to have been able to import a good collection of henna pattern books. If you don't like this one, stop by my site to see the others. Namaste!

Winter Time Henna Fun - Henna Parties for the Holidays

Here is a photo of a full palm henna tattoo I did at a get together. I am always happy to have true patrons of traditional henna as they give me the chance to stay in practice with free hand/traditional & fine line henna.

Winter can be a very good time to have a henna party because the house is toasty warm, most people are in sweaters, woolies, and long sleeves, so the body temperature is up! These conditions are excellent to help the henna paste give the darkest possible stain.

Also.. with all other body parts covered, I have a chance to do full palm henna tattoo. I will post some new photos from friends having henna in India soon. Be sure to stop by the henna bookstore to get the latest pattern booklets from India.

Namaste.

Henna Tattoo at the Midnight Sun today - 9/6/08

simple henna tattoo pattern for back of handHere is a quick little henna for the back of the hand. Now the fabulous pattern was inspired by the very talented artist at Mirage Body Art in Tallahassee, Florida.

Be sure to visit her site for some lovely art & great inspiration. I did not complete her design, as my client just wanted a touch of henna to celebrate First Friday. This henna tattoo is a "Chef's Choice" pattern.

This means your order "somehing like this" but I only have $10.00 to spend. That way, you get the look you want at a price you can afford.

This weekend is also the Riverside Art Festival.. and there may well be other henna artists out to play. I will be at Midnight Sun.. I think in the window, but if not, please look for me to be set up in the lovely rattan furniture area.

Henna Fish - Tattoo for Festival Days

fish tattoo henna tattoo free handThis little fish is a "chef's choice" pattern for the back of the hand. It took just a few minutes to create a henna pattern based on the koi.. or fancy goldfish concept.

Once the outline was drawn for the eyes & head, the rest of the fish just flowed along. You will notice the pattern is filled in with traditional henna components, the line, spot, curved and straight lines.

I hope you enjoy it. If you would like one, just stop by the Midnight Sun in Five Points, Riverside, Jacksonville, Florida.

Moroccan henna in Morocco mehndi body art tattoos

I learned so much about mixing a good paste from this video. Now, my henna is much more liquid, is easier to apply quickly, and give a deeper color as it dries more slowly. Thanks to this fine artist, my work is much improved.

Gilded Henna Tattoo - simple & elegant

gilded henna tattoo for women of color

Here is an example of the exotic beauty possible with just a bit of gilding added to your design. We started with a simple, flowing floral pattern, not too busy, not too bold, and then, once it was dry, added a bit of golden gilding to highlight the tattoo.

Notice how the golden color compliments the clients hand!! as well as her nails. This gilding paste was made with a stiff setting gel & some fine golden (jewel tone) cosmetic powder from a good costume shop.

You may want to click the photo to enlarge it for a better view. It is possible to see the tiny spots of gold added to the pattern at the tip of the finger. This was a "chef's choice" pattern, and I am sure you can see it is a popular floral motif, modified to fit the clients hand.

Gilding pastes come in a variety of colors... but it is important to know that they will only last for the day. When you take your henna paste off, the gilding comes away, and unlike the henna, there is no dye left after the paste is removed. For those of you new to henna tattoo, the dark paste you see is NOT black henna, but a photo of the tattoo with the paste still on the skin.

Bold Arabic Style Henna - Inner Arm Tattoo

Here is a new henna tattoo for one of my favorite clients. She loves bold decoration and chose to have an Arabic style design for her inner arm. This henna pattern uses dark, or thick lines to catch the eye, and just a few of the finer lines to give that wonderful intricate feeling.

This pattern took about 15 minutes to complete, and costs $15.00. It is a "Chef's Choice" design that is derived from the work of another very talented henna artist. It is often best to just point out the style of henna pattern you like & let your henna artist go from there. That way, you get a unique pattern that has the flavor you want, but fits your style and your budget.

It is important to know that this is a photo of the henna paste still on the arm. The final color will show up about 48 hours after the paste has been removed. Henna tattoo will always be some shade of red to reddish brown, depending in part on your skin type & how well you care for your design.

Women of color often get a wonderful black cherry red stain. I am hoping for a photo of the finished color... but you never know.
