Gilded Wrist Tattoos

Here are just two of the many fotos from this henna this weekend at Midnight Sun. There are so many more to publish!

I have some tribal henna, some power hennas, a kanji in disguise, and a lovely piece for the foot coming soon.
. As always, the longer the paste remains on the skin, and the hotter you get, the darker the finished color.

It is also important to remember that henna on the palms of the hands gives the best color!

Shaded Henna Flowers - A delicate look for the leg

Here is a photo with the henna paste still on the skin. I never use "black" henna, as there is no such thing! I use pure, safe, all natural Jamila henna powder for all my work this year.

For this design, you may be able to see that I experiemented with two shading techniques. One was to treat the henna cone not unlike a pencil, using it to do shading motions with the paste.

The other effort, which may or may not result in an effective shade this time, was to mix henna paste with lemon juice & sugar to create a "wash". I used this diluted henna to fill in some of the flower petals.

I will let you know how this turns out. Click the photo for a close-up.

Henna Tattoo for Christine's New Baby

Here is a photo of a henna tattoo chosen by Christine to celebrate her new baby. She found the basic design on line at Henna Lounge drew it up adding her own embellishments, and brought it down to Midnight Sun today to get her henna. The design was ammended a bit by agreement so that the pattern best fit the contours of her stomach, and make sitting easy & comfortable.

For pregnancy tattoo I make a special, very gentle blend of lavender & tea tree essential oils to go with a pure henna powder, lemon juice & a touch of honey. This is very soothing paste, and still very effective. I also started working a bit with gilding & glitter pastes, so we were able to add some red & gold gilding to her tattoo. If you want a tattoo for your belly, please call ahead so that we can discuss your pattern in advance.

Some simple planning can make your experience more comfortable. For example, you will notice that Chris wore a midriff top & a wrap around skirt so that her clothing would not interfere with her new tattoo. As well, I knew to make her unique paste & to bring the gliding because she called ahead.

Lindsay Lohan Tattoos

Lindsay Lohan Tattoo

The young actress-most famously known for her crazy partying antics-recently showed off a new tattoo on her hip reading "La Bella Vita," meaning the beautiful life, and is so happy with her own body art that she wants to run her own boutique-style needle shop in Los Angeles.

"Lindsay is setting up her own tattoo place which will be like a trendy, glass-fronted fashion store. She will work on her own designs and will market it to young society people," revealed a source to Britain's Sun newspaper. But the fiery red-haired star doesn't want to just stop at tattoos, she wants to create a whole line of Lindsay merchandise.

"Lindsay wants to create a complete brand which will move into clothes and merchandising. She's looking for business partners and tattooists to come in on it with her," added the source. Meanwhile, Lindsay is so annoyed with people criticizing her for being too skinny, that she has decided to cover up. She moaned, "I can't help it if I have a high metabolism. So I'm just going to wear more now to shut everybody up. But I'm not happy about it."

Henna starts Saturday, April 21 at Midnight Sun.

It's finally warm enough to make a good henna paste on the porch, warm enough to show some skin, play in the sun & get some henna. Thanks much to all my good friends at Midnight Sun for welcoming me back this year. I will be doing henna most all sunny Saturday afternoons at 1055 Park Street in Jacksonville, Florida. (Historic Riverside District.) I usually start sometime after noon. My first day will be Saturday April 21.

You are welcome to stop by the shop and walk in for your henna, but it is a good idea to call first to be sure I'm in. As well, if you want a large design, or traditional henna, it may be better to make an appointment. You can reach me at (904) 993-7466.
I have lots of pattern books to choose from... but feel welcome to bring your own design.

Tattoos Do's And Don'ts

Most of us can agree that tattoos seem to be the symbol of 'hipness' du jour. Old and young, Black and White are sporting tattoos of varying colours, styles and meanings. I have nothing against them personally, but I swear that some people just wake up and decide to get a tattoo without any proper thought of what they're permanently stamping on their bodies. Where they place these tattoos is another eyebrow raiser.

Anyhow, I decided to come up with some do's and don'ts for sporting tattoos:

Do keep it simple, stupid! Thinking big is usually an admirable quality, but not necessarily when you're getting a tattoo. How many times have you seen an oversized lower back tattoo (also known as the 'tramp stamp') peering out from under a lady's top and wonder what the heck she was thinking? Simple is always better.

Don't tattoo your breasts! There are hundreds of women walking around Barbados right now with all kinds of designs on their chests, and I wonder if they know that gravity ain't a female's friend. Besides, that can't be good for the breasts at all.

Find out what tattoo symbols mean. That Sanskrit or Kanji symbol might look real cool on your shoulder blade or ankle, but I don't think you'd be too happy if you found out its meaning was 'moron'.tattoosDon't get multiple, multi-coloured tattoos. This picture says it all. She looks like she was mutilated.tattoosDon't place multiple tattoos on one limb, especially on a leg. It looks like you have a skin disease.

tattoosWomen, please don't place tattoos on your upper arms, 'cause you look butch as wuh. Unless that's the look you're going for....

How To Find A Good Tattoo Shop

So… you’ve been thinking it over for weeks now and you’ve decided you’re finally going to take the plunge… gather up your ten closest friends and go get a tattoo. With your cash in hand, and a vague idea of what you want, you open up the yellow pages to find your friendly neighborhood tattoo artist. Much to your surprise, you find not just one or two, but 10 or more shops listed. What now? With the rise in popularity of tattooing, there has been an exponential increase in recent years of new tattoo studios, eager and willing to cash in on the public’s newfound interest in skin art. This has both its advantages and disadvantages.

Competition between studios offers you, the customer, more choices than ever. It also helps to force tattooists to keep their rates reasonable. A chief disadvantage, however, is that it’s become increasingly more difficult to find a good tattooist. Before you flip a coin or throw a dart, realize that this is no decision to be taken lightly. With new studios opening on what seems like every corner, it’s become more important than ever to do your homework. There are more tattooists working today than at any other point in history, which, sadly, also means that there are more bad tattooists working than at any other point in history. Here are a few tips on getting a tattoo you can be proud of.

First, and most importantly, think about what you want!!! What do you want your new tattoo to say about you? Do you want it to say anything at all? Where do you want it? Why do you want it? There is an endless supply of ideas out there, just waiting for you to go find them. The Internet, library, comic books, fabric patterns, craft books, etc, can all be excellent sources of design ideas. With the quality of work available today, you’re only limited by your imagination and your budget.

Once you have an idea in mind, it’s time to find a good studio. This is the easy part, though very time consuming. Yourfriends will most certainly offer their advice, and this is fine, but don’t go on that alone. Take a day to drive from shop to shop, with the intent of not getting a tattoo. When you walk in, go directly to the counter, and ask to see the artist’s portfolio. If they don’t (or won’t) show you one, leave immediately. This is the only way to gauge the ability of the tattooist. Don’t be distracted by the walls full of brightly colored designs or the flashing neon in the windows. Take your time and closely examine the portfolio, looking for crisp, clear photographs of healed tattoos with smooth line work, solid color, no scar tissue, and a style that is pleasing to your eye. Be critical…Remember that artists almost always put their best work in their portfolios, so if what you see is mediocre at best, what you’ll get won’t be much better. Once you’ve decided if the work is of acceptable quality, take a few minutes to look around. Is the shop clean? Well lit? Does it have a good “vibe”? Talk to the staff. Ask about their experience. How did they learn? Where have they worked? Does the artist seem friendly, cooperative, confident, and knowledgeable? If all’s well so far, now you can check out the designs they have on the walls and/or in the books. You never know… you might get some new ideas… but do not get tattooed yet! You have a lot of shops to check out still.

Do the same thing a to the same thing at each shop, being mindful to look at quality, cleanliness, professionalism, and style, and keep a mental note of how each shop rates in comparison to the others. Once you’ve checked out all of the local studios, you can now make an informed decision on where to go to get your tattoo and who you would like to do it.

Ankle Tattoos

The small size of most ankle tats means that many people choose their tattoo from among the flash art displayed at tattoo studios, which is another (free) option for your tattoo design.

Cross Tattoos

The cross has been used as a symbol in ancient Greek and Egyptian cultures, as well as by the Aztecs, whose culture of human sacrifice was actually quite shocking. Even the Norse God Thor's hammer is thought to be represented by the Tau cross. And, even the Hebrew letter Tau (or Tav) is said to be a form of the cross. The writings of ninteenth century occultist Aleister Crowley teach that the cross and the Tau are at once symbols of power and the human phallus. Cross symbolism can be found in numerous civilizations, and cultures across a great many centuries.
